Limited Draw Hunts for Elk

Every state with elk has limited draw hunts of some kind. Tapping into this system requires research. You can spend dozens of hours deciding on the best units or you can enlist the help of a licensing service that knows the ins and outs of the system and has done the research on which units to apply. The largest and best known of these services is United States Outfitters out of Taos, NM. You can contact them at (800) 845-9929. If you want to do the research yourself, here is some information to get you started.

Arizona:

How it works: All units quota limited. Preferences points accrue but don't move you into a different pool, only increase the number of names in the hat. Application deadline: Early June

Contact information: (602) 942-3000, www.gf.state.az.us

New Mexico:

How it works: Most units are quota limited, but landowner tags permit bypassing the draw - but are costly. No preference points awarded. Application deadline: April
