| Calling Elk Calling elk is similar to calling turkeys but elk are bigger, smarter, and have a better sense of smell. Most diehard elk hunters begin their day by arriving at the top of a mountain or ridge before daylight and waiting until they hear a bull bugle. After they hear a bull bugle, they head in that direction and call as they go. There are two basic calls used to call in bull elk. The most popular calling technique is imitating a bull bugle with a bugle call. Bulls are very territorial and often when they hear a bull bugling in their neck of the woods, they come running and try to chase the other bull off. The other calling technique used is a cow mew. A cow elk often mews as she feeds in the morning and mews regularly to communicate with the herd. When a cow is in heat, she mews for extended periods to let a bull know she is in heat. There are many cow calls designed to imitate a cow in estrus. |
